Northeast Philadelphia Subway Extension via Roosevelt Boulevard

An extension of the current Broad Street subway from the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia to the outskirts of Somerton has been proposed by City transportation planners since the 1930's. Such an extension would likely be the most productive rail expansion project in the region as it would eliminate many bus and automobile trips along Roosevelt Boulevard, and provide relief to current rail services on segments of the West Trenton line and Market Frankford Line.

Roosevelt Blvd Corridor

In December 2001, the Philadelphia City Planning Commission gave preliminary approval to a "local preferred alternative" ("alternative C-prime"), a proposal that would continue the Broad Street Line along Roosevelt Boulevard to Bustleton Avenue, and would tie in a proposed extension of the Market-Frankford Line at the Roosevelt Boulevard-Bustleton Avenue terminus.

The Pennsylvania Transit Expansion Coalition (PA-TEC) supports the extension of SEPTA's Broad Street Subway along Roosevelt Boulevard.

Project Benefits:

  • 124,500 daily boardings
  • 83,300 daily car trips eliminated
  • Consolidation and redeployment of current bus service
  • Traffic and pollution reduction along Route 1 corridor from Bucks County to Hunting Park, Philadelphia
  • Reduction in SEPTA operating expenses, per passenger
